More Things Glitter Than Just Gold

"This moment is directly connected to those childhood imaginings. And for anybody who's on the down side of advantage and relying purely on courage, it's possible." - Russell Crowe's 2000 Oscar Speech

Seems only fitting to include one of my favorite acceptance speeches for Crowe's phenomenal performance in "Gladiator."  But the Oscar gold is tarnished this year.  #OscarsSoWhite makes a valid point.  But... so, too, do others who say talented Minority actors should not receive nominations based solely on the fact that they are Minorities.   Do I think the Oscars are whitewashed?  Hell yes!  Idris Elba blew me away (again) in "Beasts of No Nation."  So honor the work and the craft... from whomever, provided their WORK is worthy of being honored.

"You don't make pictures for Oscars." - Martin Scorsese

I'll make a few Oscar predictions in a minute.  But every year, I never miss the "In Memoriam" portion of the Academy Awards.  And thanks to a quick internet search to help me refresh my memory, we lost some great ones in 2015.   So Rest in Peace - Leonard Nimoy, Maureen O'Hara, Wes Craven, Omar Sharif, James Best and Stuart Scott (boo-yah) - just to name a few.

"I can't believe I am hosting the Oscars.  It's an honor everyone else said no."  - Seth MacFarlane

I am looking forward to Chris Rock as host.  If he doesn't hit the #OscarSoWhite with both barrels, he has failed as a comic. Not as a black comic.. as a comic.  Get passed skin color, would you please?  I still miss Billy Crystal and Johnny Carson.  But I'll take Rock over just about anyone else.  Go get 'em Chris!  Now to the inevitable bullshit predictions --   DiCaprio wins for "Revenant."  "Inside Out" is your best Animated Film.   After that?  It's a crapshoot.  Perhaps J-Law again.  But Cate Blanchett is amazing, too.  Director? Inarritu has a slight edge... but is not a lock.  Best Picture?  My heart says "Spotlight" but my gut says "The Big Short."  My ass says I don't really give a shit.   So there it is.  And I'd like to thank the Academy... and I'll see you at the Oscars one day soon! - MO
